Just a few days ahead of the Chinese New Year, Huang Wan 黄婉, daughter-in-law of Zhou Yongkang(周永康, a disgraced former member of the Politburo Standing Committee who was sentenced to life imprisonment) took it to Twitter to express her hope to visit her then husband Zhou Bin 周滨, who is now serving 18 years in prison. To the best of my knowledge, the tweet indeed truthfully describes Huang Wan’s circumstances. Its authenticity has been confirmed by both Pu Zhiqiang 浦志强 (a human rights lawyer) and Chen Yixuan 陈以轩 (Zhou Bin’s attorney), according to Apple Daily’s report. But is Huang Wan the actual person behind the Twitter account? Or is the account managed by someone else, perhaps an acquaintance of hers? I still have some doubts.
Huang Wan’s grandfather, Huang Jiqing 黄汲清, is a prestigious geologist. (There’s some disagreement about who should be granted the honorary title “the founder of China's geology”. Is it the better-known Li Siguang 李四光, or is it Huang Jiqing?) Huang Wan immigrated to the United States with her parents as early as 1986, but hadn’t enjoyed the life of privilege until she fell in love with Zhou Bin.
From the other tweets written or retweeted by the alleged Huang Wan’s Twitter account, I see some inconsistency in the quality and clearness of her judgement. And I just don’t see the distinctive marks of China’s princelings’ families: a certain kind of aloofness, an air of dignity in outlook and manners...
Family members of disgraced high-ranking officials almost always choose to keep silent. They have neither the confidence nor the courage to protest within the CCP system, for fear that the Chinese authorities will exact even more vengeance on them.
Gu Kailai 谷开来 is imprisoned in Yanjing Prison 燕京监狱. Her right to family visits was denied for an entire year. Yet her family members were reluctant to get outside help. Bo Xilai’s 薄熙来 refusal to express repentance in Qincheng Prison 秦城监狱 is a rare case among imprisoned high-ranking officials.
The Venezuelan stalemate continues. Guaido successfully rallied massive protests, showing his appeal among the Venezuelan people. But for now, the support he has garnered is not extensive enough to overthrow Maduro, who is still holding on to his power.
South America is the political arena for the United States, Russia, and China. The military dictatorship of Chile was established following a US backed coup d'état in 1973 which overthrew the socialist government of Salvador Allende. The military junta headed by Augusto Pinochet brutally murdered Victor Jara, a singer-songwriter and political activist, at the Chile Stadium. But Pinochet’s military government was able to forestall the Socialist democratic model. Economic liberalization ushered in an era of high economic growth.
The tyranny of Pinochet has inflicted permanent, incurable pain on countless families in Chile. For more than 40 years, the Chilean people have been trying to bring justice back to the country. The stadium where Victor Jara had been tortured and murdered was named after the political singer-songwriter. In addition to hosting sports events, the stadium has now become a concert venue in tribute to Victor Jara’s memory and legacy.
Is justice delayed nothing but justice denied? It is more terrifying when people have forsaken the pursuit of justice and hardened their hearts to truth. How many people’s memories of the 1989 Tiananmen Square Protests have faded with the lapse of time, after all those 30 years? But there are still people who have not given up.
